University of Mexico Tells of Fiscal Crisis

MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s largest public university is projecting a “crisis situation” because of a $13-million deficit in government funding this year, El Universal newspaper reported last week.
The budget cutbacks at the National Autonomous University of Mexico prompted alumni to begin a major fund-raising drive, the newspaper said.
Dean Jorge Carpizo McGregor said the deficit will lead to the “deterioration of the university and stagnation of investigative projects,” El Universal said.
The university, the largest in Latin America, is responsible for 60% of Mexico’s investigations in the social sciences.
