Tutu Cancels TV Appearance After Insult by Network

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Nobel Peace Prize winner Bishop Desmond Tutu withdrew from a South African television program on disinvestment today after the country’s state-run radio service broadcast a scathing attack on him.
Tutu, the Anglican bishop of Johannesburg, refused to have any dealings with the South Africa Broadcasting Corp. until it apologized for the broadcast.
The radio commentary said: “With his constant stream of absurd pronouncements, Bishop Tutu is, surely, inevitably destined to discredit himself.”
The broadcast called Tutu an “ambitious” clergyman with a fraudulent concern for human rights.
