ATHENS — Gunmen assassinated the publisher of a right-wing newspaper in his car in downtown Athens today, police said.
Nicos Momferatos, 61, publisher of Apoghevmatini (Afternooner) and head of the Athens newspaper publishers’ association, was slain as his car rounded a busy intersection. His driver was critically wounded. Police said the assailants, armed with a pistol, escaped. In 1973, Momferatos served briefly as minister of industry in a short-lived government under right-wing politician Spyros Markezinis when the military rulers made an attempt to politicize their regime.
