A 5-foot, 7-inch, 230-pound robbery suspect collapsed and died after he “ran himself to death” while trying to elude pursuing police officers after a robbery at a Santa Monica gas station, police said. Sgt. Gregory Slaughter said officers staked out the 24-hour gas station and reportedly saw Rene Jackson, 30, rob the establishment. Jackson then fled in his truck when he saw the approaching officers. A brief car chase ensued and then Jackson tried to outrun officers. “He had a heart attack and sat down and died,” Slaughter said. “Apparently, he ran himself to death.”
