A 22-year old Phoenix man was arrested near Lakeside Thursday on suspicion of kidnaping a Phoenix woman and her daughter, a student at a private girls’ school in Escondido. Sheriff’s deputies arrested Timothy Franklin Smith after a chase ended when the suspect’s car ran off California 67 and flipped over into a ravine, authorities said. A Sheriff’s Department spokesman said Smith kidnaped Mary Robison, 48, in Phoenix and drove her car to Los Angeles, and then to Escondido, where he abducted her daughter, Carol, 14, and set Mrs. Robison free. Escondido police and sheriff’s deputies pursued Smith to near Lakeside, where the victim struggled with Smith and forced the car off the road, authorities said. Smith surrendered to deputies without incident a short time later. The FBI also is investigating.
