MUNICH, West Germany — A 20-year-old East German border guard disarmed a fellow guard and fled to West Germany on Tuesday night, West German police reported Wednesday.
The two men were on patrol to watch for refugees fleeing from East Germany into Bavaria when one of the guards seized an opportunity to flee, a police spokesman said.
He disarmed the other guard and scaled a 10-foot metal grating at a point on the border where there are no mines.
East German authorities assign guards to the border in pairs so they can watch one another.
