Los Angeles police are seeking witnesses to the shooting of a 26-year-old West Los Angeles woman who remains in guarded condition.
West Los Angeles detective Richard Zolkowski said the woman’s name is being withheld because her family fears the gunman might attack her in the hospital.
She was shot about 9:30 p.m. last Thursday in front of her apartment on Rexford Drive, south of Pico Boulevard.
The woman told police she had just returned from an exercise class. As she prepared to climb the front stairs of her apartment building, four or five youths between the ages of 13 and 17 suddenly surrounded her, she said. Within seconds, a single shot was fired, striking her in the back.
The attackers ran to a car parked nearby, fled north to Pico Boulevard and turned right, according to a witness. He said the license number of the vehicle began with the letters NL.
Police said the slug, which was fired from a handgun, went through the woman’s body. Zolkowski said doctors removed the victim’s spleen and one kidney.
Anyone having any information is asked to call West Los Angeles detectives at (213) 478-0731, extension 441.
