A Coast Guard spokesman said late Wednesday that a search would continue through the night for a sailboat that had reportedly been capsized by migrating whales off Encinitas. The Coast Guard received a call at 3:39 p.m. from a person reporting to have witnessed the capsizing of the boat from shore, the spokesman said. Only one person reported the incident, he said. County lifeguards were sent to the area of the reported sighting but found no signs of an accident. The Coast Guard then sent a helicopter, an 82-foot cutter and a 41-foot rescue boat to join in the search. The two vessels and the helicopter were still searching late Wednesday.
