San Diego police and firefighters blocked traffic in about a four block-area of downtown Thursday to investigate what was believed to be a bomb in a suitcase. No bomb was found, however. At 11:34 a.m., a civilian employee of the Police Department saw what she thought was a suspicious package on the northwest corner of 6th Avenue and Ash Street, San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said. Traffic was sealed off from 6th Avenue between Ash and B Streets and A Street between 5th and 7th avenues, said Fire Department spokesman Logan Bellows. The Fire Department bomb disposal unit found a suitcase in the area and took it a landfill in the Chollas area. There, they X-rayed the suitcase but found no bomb. Traffic in the area was moving smoothly again by 1 p.m., Robinson said.
