Baseball: Buckel strikes out 15 for Royal in 1-0 victory

Senior Cody Buckel of Simi Valley Royal continues to show why he’s one of the top pitchers in Southern California. He struck out 15 on Friday and allowed one hit in the Highlanders’ 1-0 victory over Calabasas in a Marmonte League game.
Justin Greco drove in the game’s only run with a double in the fourth inning. Jacob Fields was the tough-luck losing pitcher. Royal is 19-5 and 10-1 in league. Moorpark defeated Simi Valley, 20-2. Westlake defeated Thousand Oaks, 11-3, with Christian Yelich getting three hits and Danny Nieves having a no-hitter into the fifth.
In the Mission League, Ethan Bramschreiber threw a two-hitter and Dave Hubinger got his team’s only hit of the game _ a three-run triple _ to lift St. Francis past Mission Hills Alemany, 3-1. Cody Thompson pitched a complete game for Alemany (17-7, 6-4).
In the Foothill League, Canyon Country Canyon defeated Newhall Hart, 5-3. Thomas Kratky pitched the complete game, striking out seven. West Ranch defeated Valencia, 8-4. Dakota Hernandez hit a two-run pinch-hit home run in the sixth inning. Jared Ortiz got two more hits, raising his hitting streak to 22 games.
In the Sunset League, Huntington Beach Edison took over sole possession of first place with a 12-9 victory over Anaheim Esperanza. Nic Hanson picked up the victory.
In the East Valley League, Arleta (21-4, 10-0) clinched the championship with a 6-0 victory over Verdugo Hills. Ivan Ceja (7-3) pitched the shutout. Miguel Perez and Manny Guzman hit home runs.
In the Suburban League, La Mirada (16-8, 7-1) defeated Lakewood Mayfair, 4-3. Karl Perez hit a home run and Arizona-bound Daniel Poncedeleon threw the complete game. La Mirada has won 13 of its last 14 games.
In the Olympic League, Van Nuys Montclair Prep (18-5, 8-0) came back from a 9-0 deficit to defeat North Hollywood Campbell Hall, 11-10. Ben McKendall’s two-run single in the sixth drove in the tying and winning runs. McKendall, Max Miller, Tony Rosales, Max Fried and Josh Brodsky each had two hits. Eddie Munoz went four for four to lead Campbell Hall.
In the Camino Real League, L.A. Cathedral (18-3, 10-1) defeated Bosco Tech, 7-5. Joe Gonzales threw a six-hitter, striking out nine. Chris Flores, Sergio Luna and Phillip Perez had two hits apiece.
In a nonleague game, West Hills Chaminade defeated Fillmore, 11-2. Chaminade (20-4) has won 16 of its last 17 games.
