This has to make Crenshaw football Coach Robert Garrett smile when he thinks about the implications for next season.

His sophomore tailback, DeAnthony Thomas, ran the fastest time today in his 100 meter heat at the City Section preliminary track meet at Birmingham High. His junior wide receivers, Gregory Ducre and Jonathan Downard, won their respective 100 heats as well.

Think the Cougars will have some speed on the gridiron in 2009?

Thomas ran the 100 in 10.73 seconds and said afterward that he wasn’t even going all out.

‘I just tried to make it,’ Thomas said. ‘I know I should be running faster than that, but it’s all right. It’s just the prelims.’

Ducre finished in 10.90 and Downard in 10.94 to qualify for next week’s City finals. The other qualifiers were Dorsey’s Robert Herron in 10.76, Santee’s Tevin Carter in a personal-best 10.78, Taft’s Dale Morgan, who finished second in Thomas’ heat in 10.89, Dorsey’s Brian McDade in 11.02 and Washington’s Shawn McCoy in 11.04.
