There were a few big-time performances from a couple of talented players and teams in the opening round of pool play at the Moorpark Tip-Off Classic on Tuesday night:
- Harvard-Westlake 6-foot-8 forward Renaldo Woolridge overcame a sluggish first half and scored 22 points in the final 16 minutes to push the Wolverines, ranked No. 15 in The Times’ preseason rankings, to a 61-59 victory over a surprising Granada Hills squad. The Tennessee-bound Woolridge finished with 26 points and 16 rebounds. By the way, does anyone in the blogosphere have any predictions about how the Highlanders will do this season?
- Hart‘s Mike Montgomery didn’t let a broken nose he suffered last week against La Canada slow him down in the Indians’ 66-56 victory over Oxnard. The 6-foot-4 senior scored a game-high 25. Montgomery better take it easy out there -- it would be a shame if the Cal State Fullerton-bound pitcher misses his senior season on the mound because of an injury on the court.
- Also, Oak Park ‘upset’ Nordhoff tournament champions and previously undefeated Moorpark, 57-53. But maybe the Eagles are the real deal this season under new Coach Joey Ramirez. I’ll be watching ...
The Moorpark tournament continues through Saturday. Check here for a full schedule.
