He’s not running for president for a change. And he hasn’t been in the news for -- what? -- days now. But the Rev. Al Sharpton is complaining now of discrimination by federal authorities investigating his last hopeless bid for the White House.
According to New York newspapers, the feds have subpoenaed employees of and records from Sharpton’s 2004 presidential campaign, his nonprofit civil rights group and his for-profit businesses. There’s a Brooklyn federal grand jury that wants to talk to these folks right after Christmas.
‘I can’t remember a time that I’ve not been under investigation,’ Sharpton says.
Sharpton suggests that the latest investigation is retaliation for his civil rights advocacy, specifically a demonstration he led at the Justice Department weeks ago to demand federal intervention in the Louisiana ‘Jena Six’ case.
