The Kings showed a video paying tribute to their players -- and members of the Montreal Canadiens -- who represented their respective homelands at the just-completed Vancouver Olympics.
Fans at Staples Center gave a mixed reaction to the sight, on the center-ice scoreboard, of Sidney Crosby scoring to give Canada the gold medal over the U.S. But they roared when Kings defenseman Drew Doughty got his gold medal -- which is about as close as they’re likely to get to seeing it.
Doughty didn’t bring the medal back with him from Vancouver, he said Saturday morning.
‘I got my mom to take it home from the Olympics just in case I dropped it or broke it or something,’ he said. ‘I don’t want to be doing that.’
He also said he hasn’t decided what do to with his golden prize.
‘I don’t what I’m going to do with it,’ he said, ‘whether I’m going to put it away in a safe or put it on display at my parents’ house.’
For those keeping tabs on the Olympians, the early tally was Montreal -- behind Slovakia goaltender Jaroslav Halak -- 1, and the Kings -- behind backup U.S. goalie Jonathan Quick -- 0.
