Dorner manhunt: Big Bear schools reopening with extra security

Big Bear schools will reopen Monday after closing last week during the search for fugitive ex-police officer Christopher Dorner, district officials said.
‘Additional security measures and additional law enforcement’ will be in place at the schools Monday, Bear Valley Unified School District Supt. Kurt Madden said in a statement.
The district’s schools were locked down Thursday afternoon as the massive manhunt for Dorner — the ex-Los Angeles police officer suspected in three killings — moved to Big Bear after his truck was found burning on a forest road. Classes were canceled Friday as the search continued.

In the days since, there have been no new signs of Dorner.
On Sunday, the search in the area was scaled back to about 25 officers and a helicopter, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said. At its peak, more than 200 SWAT officers and federal agents trekked through a snowstorm, scouring mountain roads and checking hundreds of cabins door to door.

On Sunday morning, authorities received a tip that Dorner may have been spotted down the mountain in San Bernardino, forcing the evacuation of an apartment complex, but it turned out to be a false alarm.
